Another solid performance puts the Lions at the top of the pack

Another solid performance from the Lewes Lions u16 leaves them in top spot in the Sussex u16 league as the Christmas break approaches. Having started the season slowly with a 2 losses and 2 draws the lions have put together 6 wins on the bounce to take them to top of the league with 20 points. With move of several of last season's senior players moving up the club - the rest of the team are having to take more responsibility and it is heartening to see a number of the team growing in stature on the pitch. The two goal scorers this week both returned to the team having missed last weeks game. Archie Sherwood was full of energy and commitment consistently putting pressure on the Brighton defense and his efforts were rewarded with a well taken shot at the far post following great work by Fred Squires-Saunders and Drew Wain whose slick passing opened up Brighton's defense. Sam Worlidge, maturing into the central midfield role, had another excellent game capped by a well taken strike following another fluent Lewes move midway through the second half.

The Lions high press kept the opposition well contained in their own half and resorting to a long ball game. Any chances Brighton did have were easily mopped up by Billy Palmer who was commanding in the Lewes goal and Ollie Loader (making his season debut for the Lions) playing solidly in defense alongside Harry Davenport and Sam Webster.

The final score of 2 - 0 didn't reflect the difference in the two sides with Lewes squandering numerous chances in front of goal. So maybe Santa will bring some magic shooting sticks which with further work on our short corners routines will pay dividends in the new year.

Just the u16 Sussex Cup first rounds remains before Christmas and as reigning Sussex champions Lewes Lions have high hopes of retaining their trophy
