Lewes u16 boys beat East Grinstead to secure Sussex Cup final place

Lewes U16 won a game of many emotions at East Grinstead in the semi final of the Sussex Cup. From the start Lewes found themselves under pressure and poor decision making and passing piled on the pressure. Stan Hughes drafted in at very late notice was making his first appearance in goal for 5 months was called on to make a number of saves - Lewes's confidence began to grow and their first fluent move saw the ball moved quickly from defence by Gui Green to Charlie Cooke who found Jago Hussain in space on the right wing. Jago out paced the EG defence and cut a sharp pass back across the goal which Ben Battle anticipated, deftly placing the ball beyond the EG keeper. Confidence rose and Lewes began to take control of the game, Leon Keating found plenty of space on the right and with Drew Wain working tirelessly and great support from Toby Izzard and Louis Soudain Lewes began to out play EG gaining several short corners well saved by the Grinstead keeper. A momentary lass as half time approached saw EG patch an interception moving the ball quickly down field to leave Lewes out numbered in defence and despite Stan's man of the match heroics. Lewes found themselves at 1-1 at halftime.

Despite having the younger side Lewes raised their second half performance with Jamie and Ollie Ingham making solid appearances and following another short corner Charle pounced with a rasping short to but Lewes 2-1 up. EG pressure began to tell and Stan was called upon to make a number of fine saves. Toby picked up a tremendous ball from the tireless Hugh Porter sprinted 30 m into the D only to be illegally demolished by the EG keeper, who was luck not to spend the rest of the game in the sin bin - the non award of a penalty upset Lewes and concentration waived conceding a short corner as the final whistle blew. EG scored from a cruel deflection leaving Stan wrong footed. Pentalies it was to settle the game. Lewes won the toss and Drew showed the way with a first, Stan produced a fine save , Charlie scored, EG scored, Gui scored, 3-1, Stan saved and it was down to Leon to win the match.

The final is at Lewes 3pm on the 22nd April v Worthing
