Lions beat St Francis 1 - 0 in the opening game of the league season

The Lions (Lewes u16 Boys side) opened the league season with a 1-0 win over St Francis. The side drew heavily on the U14 boys for the opening match as many of last years side are now too old or were unavailable. There were 7 players making their debut for the Lions and all performed well. Sam Webster, last years Lions player of the season, captained the side from centre midfield and put in a tremendous shift setting a great example to the younger boys in the side. Ben Battle, Ollie Amos and Hugh Porter playing up front all had significant amounts of possession as the the midfield delivered early ball pinning back the St Francis defence. Heroric 'keeping by the St Francis keeper kept the Lions at bay until 10 mins before half time when Hugh pounced on a rebound from the keepers pads, following a shot by Leon Keating, to flick the ball into the roof of the net. Ollie Loader and Ollie Ingham in central defence were really troubled by St Francis and were able to bring the ball forward for Lewes. Toby Hutchinson, Barnaby Heinzl and Dylan Williams also played solidly using the ball well and working tirelessly up and down the flanks.

Following halftime St Francis had a spell of possession forcing a couple of saves from Billie Palmer who dealt with them with ease. Following breakdowns, Lewes did produce a number of swift counter attacks producing further saves from St Francis keeper and woodwork which kept out a rasping shot from Ollie Amos. The Jamie Comb, Sam Webster and Toby Izzard kept the ball moving swiftly between defence and attack ensuring that St Francis spent the rest of the game defending furiously.

Despite failing to capitalise on their procession the Lions eased to a well deserved victory . An away fixture next Saturday against Crawley is next up.
