The October sun was out in Worthing in honour of the large squad of Lionesses who were rotating on the pitch with great enthusiasm and strong battling determination to keep the ball. The opposition also fought strongly, and we could see a tough game was on the cards. The Lionesses however demonstrated some great passages of play from defence through the mids and attacking into their D.
It was really positive to see the girls pre-scanning the pitch instead of the more panicked passes that will often happen when players are putting on the pressure. They also made some great runs showing good awareness of space which certainly opened up many more chances on goal than usual. The first half enjoyed a great team manoeuvre up the pitch, with Hazel passing to Ruby who then struck past the keeper to put the Lionesses 1-0 up.
The Worthing Llamas weren't quite able to equalise back despite many good efforts. They were quick to take their 16s, and caught us out a few times, with the ball making it back up the pitch before we'd even got ourselves back in to position - something we can think about for our future games.
The Lionessess all worked amazingly hard. Lucy and Hazel showed great strength at the back, hardly letting anything through. There was brilliant battling in the midfield from Sofia and Tabby amongst others, and the rolling forwards were always supporting each other well with good triangular play. Nina was chosen by Worthing as the Lionesses player of the match.
Well played everyone - bring on the next game!
