Wash out for the Ladies 4s at Hail-sham

This game couldn’t have been timed better. The umpire blew the whistle and the skies immediately opened for the next 35 minutes. Undeterred, the Lewes Weather Girls were virtually singing in the rain as they played flowing hockey, stringing together passes like they’d been doing it for years. Oh wait, they have.

The first goal came after 13 minutes from a hard strike from Zoe ‘Why does it always rain on me?’ Richards at top D and a finishing touch from Hep to ensure it hit the target.

Lewes continued to have most of the possession in this dark and stormy game and there was some good linking play between Fern Ketley (is a weatherman) and Richards down the right of the pitch.

Flooz ‘you snooze you looz’ had a storming game at left back and fed some useful long balls to the forwards and midfielders. One of which resulted in a Penalty corner – cleanly struck by Harriet ‘Let it rain’ Cunningham for a left post deflection by injector Heps. 2-0.

Hailsham then took the Lewes defence by surprise and scored from a left sided attack.

The second half got off with a dry start but wasn’t plain sailing. Centre Forward Sara ‘Thunderstruck’ Hep inadvertently took on the keeper in a game of chest bump and came off decidedly worse and she was resigned to watching the rest of the half from the sidelines shaken up and with a sore head.

The incident seemed to precipitate Hailsham’s next goal as Lewes certainly didn’t have their ducks in a row when the game restarted. 2-2.

Lewes retaliated and Ketley did well to put away Lewes’ final goal of the game. But the win sailed away from them on the wind as Hailsham managed a breakaway goal to give both teams a share of the points.
