Burgess Hill had the winning formula in 9 goal match

The big questions being asked pre-game last Saturday were: Would Mould go the distance? Would Richard be there before the start? And would Nanny ‘The Bruce’ McPhee be able to keep the baby quiet for 70 minutes? The answers - Yes, yes and no.

After only 3 minutes Lewes were awarded a penalty corner from which Julia ‘gold top’ Hoare’s first strike was saved. Sara ‘cream of the crop’ Leatherland followed up and made no mistake.

Soon afterwards another penalty corner saw Captain ‘semi-skimmed’ Mould strike from top D to find Mary ‘my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard’ Harley perfectly placed at the post to ping the ball in.

Burgess Hill came back to make it 2-3 to the visitors at the break by which time Cloddy ‘the boob’ Love had some serious lactating to do.

4 minutes into the second half Lewes set up for another corner, Hoare proved she had the bottle when she found the target for her second. However, the visitors homogenized their players and scored another 2 in quick succession to make it 3-5.

With only 10 minutes left on the clock Lewes were now aiming for a draw. Then with 5 minutes remaining Zoe ‘half-whipped’ Richards took a quick sideline ball on the halfway line and skimmed it through the yellow shirts for Leathers to run onto and score with her first touch. Sadly they couldn’t convert their final chances despite being denied a penalty flick late on when Harley was taken out by the keeper.

Special mention must go to Francesca Arlett on her debut for the 4s, who had a solid game in defence with some excellent marking.
