Spirited performance from the shooting stars earns the point

Lewes were this week without many of their old faithfuls. But with Captain Mould and a record-breaking 4 supporters (only 1 dog) on the sidelines it was in good spirits that they faced an experienced, oppressive Eastbourne side.

Lewes’ first goal came after a 15 minute run of pressure from the home side. A breakaway attack from the midfield, led by Daisy ‘mazey runs’ Blewitt, culminated in the first Penalty corner of the match. Julia Hoare applied a touch of silky class to her strike which hit the target, and perhaps a defender’s foot too. 1-0.

It was again against the run of play, 15 minutes later, that Lewes scored their second goal. Mary Harley and Back to Hockey debutant Candice ‘the Booty’ Bullmore took apart the defence with a co-ordinated a left sided attack, resulting in a tap in by Harley for the finish.
Eastbourne continued to pile on the pressure in the second half but the Lewes defence including young Darcy Gallagher and Hannah ‘the Barrier’ Burrage - another BtoH fresher, worked tirelessly to keep Eastboune out of the danger zone. However, an error in the Lewes midfield enabled the home side’s skillful centre mid to bag herself the first of her 3 goals.

With the score at 2-1 Lewes were then awarded their second penalty corner of the match and as Harley’s comet ricochetted into the top corner of the net they thought they had it in the bag. Sadly Eastbourne’s number 46 scored 2 more goals and the match ended a very soggy 3 a piece.
