Ladies 4s Win 3-1 against South Downs Ladies 1

This was the second time in a week that most of the team had been on top of The South Downs - a rambling display with many ups and downs saw Lewes win unexpectedly against the big hitters from Steyning.

In the first half Dionne ‘chafed thighs’ Gooding in goal saw off many attempts with a kicking prowess which one wouldn’t have expected after her exertions on each of Seven difficult Sisters. She was commended by the opposition umpire for her standard of play, letting in only one contentious goal from South Downs early in the period.

The first Lewes goal was a reverse pass across the top of the ‘D’ to Richards who placed it superbly with a hard push past the keeper into the corner. Sara ‘Legserland’ ran her socks off throughout, enabling good use of space on the right hand side. Her efforts were rewarded with a strike on the right post close to the keeper late in the first half to make the score 2-1.

Hoare, of Hoare’s Tours, managed to organise herself to deliver a series of through balls to the youngster Kitty Simmons. Mid way through the second half Iris made use of one of these to score the final goal and take the match beyond South Downs’ reach. A well earned cup of tea for Iris!

The defence’s tactic of tackling players outside of the ‘D’ proved fruitful, keeping any further pressure off of Dionne.

We would like to thank our supporters Harriet, Harriet and Betty the mascot, who spent the match in the goalkeeping bag guarding the Deep Heat and Vaseline - essential supplies for the older team members!
