Hastings. Not to be confused with Hailsham. An easy mistake to make as they do share the first two letters of their names, but then so do quite a few other words…

With Lewes’ point-less start to the season one could be forgiven for labelling them has-beens. However, the handsome ladies made an encouraging start to the first half at Horntye Park but it was Saxons who had most of the possession, easily halting the half-hearted attacks that Lewes were able to make. The hands on defence headed up by Becky Wycherley saw off any plans the opposition had for goal scoring. Dionne Gooding stood fast between the sticks and made some harmonious saves. But Saxons were more unlucky than out-skilled and saw a number of their shots just miss the target or hit the post - harmless.

At half time, after a haranguing from the head harridan, the happy hockey players hatched a plan to wreak havoc.

After missing a sitter only a few minutes before, Sara Leatherland soon found redemption with a tap in from a backline cross from Zoe Richards. This took the Lewes Ladies into the lead for the first time this season and, at 1-0, there was everything to play for. However, their Halcyon days were numbered when Saxons broke and scored the equaliser. Not to be hampered by hamstring injuries the hard-working defence battened down the hatches and pushed back. The mid fields and forwards hassled the home side’s defence and were eventually rewarded with their third penalty corner. This time, no mistake was made and a text book P-spot routine gave Lewes their second goal - quite possibly putting Helen Fuller (Gubbs) into the running for top ladies goal scorer. Hallelujah!

This win gives Lewes their first points of the season and hoists them off the bottom of the table. Just above, um, Hailsham. To improve upon this week’s performance the team will be double checking the pitch location in their email from their captain to ensure they arrive at the right place at the right time. That’s Lewes, Darcey Gallagher, not Lewisham! ;-)
