Lewes 2s faced joint league leaders, Brighton 2s at home on Saturday.

Lewes, hugely disappointed from a frustrating goalless draw against Middleton last week, were hoping for (and needed) a much-improved performance to be in with any chance of picking up any points against a more highly-rated opposition.

When the away team turned up with a large squad and and executed a professional warm up, it was clearly evident they were fully charged for the impending battle.

As expected, Brighton started with high intensity and had the majority of possession in the early stages of the game. However, Lewes’ well-organised defence, as ever, kept them at bay, limiting Brighton to only a few shots on target, which keeper, Carla Leach dealt with, with aplomb.

After one of Brighton’s numerous attacking moves, Lewes turned the ball over, clearing it from the danger zone, setting up a counter attack. Emily Chevassut showed great pace and strength after chasing down a 50/50 ball just past the halfway line, which she coolly dribbled into the D, and slotted past the keeper- completely against the run of play.

Only a few minutes after, Chevassut made a great pass through to Amy Boyse, creating a 1-on-1 with the keeper, which Boyse connected with well, finding the bottom left corner of the goal making it 2-0.

With Brighton a little stunned by the opposition’s prowess, Lewes capitalised with a new found confidence, keeping their foot on the accelerator, creating more opportunities and testing the Brighton defence.

Boyse got her 2nd after 25 minutes in, with a well-worked penalty corner routine.

Chevassut continued to cause problems for Brighton, linking up well with Lucy Petit and she deservedly claimed her 2nd after a reverse stick shot ricocheted off a Brighton players shin.

Brighton were completely shell shocked by half time!

Lewes knew the visitors would come out hard in the 2nd period, but showed great team spirit and resilience to keep Brighton off the scoresheet. Despite the opposition changing their formation and throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Lewes, the greens stood strong and still managed to control large parts of the 2nd half.

The final score, 4-0 was fully deserved for Lewes, who remain 3rd having been the only team to beat the top 2 sides and with the best defensive record in the Sussex Premier League.
