Lewes' hopes of winning the title all but disappeared with this narrow defeat at East Grinstead against a strong team. It was a fast and skilful match on the water based surface.
The hosts had a blend of youth and experience and were the better of the two teams but Lewes had their chances in the opening half but failed to get shots on target from their three penalty corners. Their defence with goalkeeper Chris Sharpe outstanding and defenders Toby Rolph and Bill Short breaking up the host attacks frustrated the home side.
The opening goal, hotly disputed as a high ball into the circle was deftly deflected in to give EG the lead with fifteen minutes remaining. Despite hitting the post in the final ten minutes Lewes paid in the last minute for pushing players up as EG broke to make it 2-0.
