Lewes produced their best performance of the season to beat Brighton and clinch safety

Lewes produced their best performance of the season to beat Brighton and clinch safety in the league for another season. They knew Brighton would have more possession with their skilful youngsters so they set up more defensively and relied on the break with just the tireless Martyn Stillman up front. This worked well. Early Brighton pressure came to nothing and midway through the half Harry Heitman's aerial ball released Mike Fuller whose cross was converted with a powerful shot from Billy Smart. Just before half time another aerial ball and cross resulted in skipper Rob Heinzl's shot which was going wide being deflected into goal by a Brighton defender.

Lewes goalkeeper ex Great Britain keeper Sean Rowlands was outstanding throughout thwarting the Brighton attacks but it was a similar story in the second half as the Lewes defence was under more pressure. Solid tackling and covering by defenders Bill Short, Chris Picken and Steve Fuller prevented any goals. With fifteen minutes left Heinzl latched on to a loose ball in the circle and fired home to make it 3-0 and although Brighton grabbed a consolation from close range Lewes had the final say as Heitman converted a penalty corner with a reverse stick strike in the final minutes.
