A feisty match saw Lewes start poorly and concede three goals by half time as the hosts dominated possession. Lewes struggled to put pressure on the Mid Sussex defence but looked out of the match at the break.
The second half was different as Lewes stretched the home defence early on but needed a goal to get back into the match. It arrived midway through when a skilful run down the right wing by Shaun Smith ended with a fierce shot into the goal. Lewes sensed they might still get something and with five minutes left Billy Smart saw his shot deflected to make it 3-2. It was all Lewes in the closing stages but they could not convert this pressure and were made to pay for a slow start.
