Saxons had a number of fast youngsters who not for the first time caused Lewes problems but it was not until deep into the second half that their victory was finally assured.
Lewes had to get ex GB international goalkeeper Sean Rowlands to play in goal due to injuries. After fifteen minutes a ball into the Lewes circle caused panic and a quick shot found its way into the goal to give the hosts the lead. Lewes created a number of penalty corners but a well drilled defence and an instinctive save from the Saxons goalkeeper thwarted Lewes. Saxons doubled the lead just before halftime from close range to leave Lewes facing an uphill task.
Lewes started the second half with more possession and a penalty corner follow up shot from Ed Cade was blocked by a foot on the line but Chris Picken's penalty flick was well saved. Lewes were indebted to Rowlands for a number of saves as Saxons had chances to put the match beyond Lewes. Martin Stillman was at the heart of most of Lewes's attacks and they grabbed a lifeline with 10 minutes remaining when skipper Robert Heinzl's penalty corner shot found its way into the goal. It was not to be as Saxons broke from defence to score with a well placed shot from the top of the circle to clinch victory in the final minutes.
