Against a younger and fitter side Lewes had the better possession in the first half but could not convert three penalty corners and then saw skipper Robert Heinzl's thunderous shot from the top of the circle tipped over the bar by the outstanding Brighton goalkeeper.
Lewes started strongly in the second half but could not get the crucial opening goal. Martyn Stillman blocked some dangerous situations in defence and used his speed in midfield to create opportunities in attack and Hugo Youngman marshalled the defence well but Lewes could not get passed the Brighton goalkeeper who made more saves. Then midway through the half Brighton converted a penalty corner when the shot deflected in off a Lewes defenders stick. Five minutes later a tackle in the Lewes circle left the Brighton player on the ground and whilst the hosts defence stopped, expecting a whistle a Brighton forward flicked the ball into the goal to make it 2-0. Lewes piled forward and Heinzl converted a penalty corner to make it 2-1 with five minutes remaining but another one in the final minute was blocked to leave Lewes wondering what might have been.
