They matched their opponents for long periods in the first, half having greater possession but were unable to convert chances. It was frustrating that an aerial ball caused panic in the Lewes defence allowing the hosts to break the deadlock. Lewes creditably came back and Sean Rowlands set up the equaliser with an accurate pass for Paul Spruce to deflect in. Lewes had further penalty corner opportunities but it was Eastbourne who went ahead just on half time.
Lewes conceded a goal in the first minute of the second half which set the tone as they were unable to stop the speed of the Eastbourne forwards and too often misplaced passes gifted the ball away. The home side scored again to make it 4-1 and, despite the hard work of Chris Picken in midfield helping to set up a flurry of late penalty corners, Lewes were unable to convert these and were well beaten.
