Match Report: Richard Pulley
The 3s collective New Years resolutions of arriving on time focused and determined was evident in the warm-up. Not even the drenching by the pitch watering devices could dampen the energy and optimism of the team. Sporting a revolutionary and highly innovative 442 formation Lewes controlled the match from the first touch. The additional midfield support allowed the creative genius of Billy Smart to set the tempo of the Lewes attacks ably supported by a rearguard of Champness, Dakin, Youngman and Picken who, with more than a millennia of experience, repelled with ease the youthful exuberance of the East Grinstead team. Picken, in particular, rolling back the years to become a flying full-back turning defence into offence with consummate ease.
However, for all the first half domination Lewes failed to convert several chances and with the EG keeper making several saves the half time discussion centred on one goal being sufficient for victory. Seconds into the second half this goal came with a flowing passing move resulting in a deft finish from the exceptional Toby Izzard who along with Sam Webster produced a season-best performance exactly when required. Not satisfied with winning by a single goal a delightfully finished second goal was added by Tom ‘starting to look like Pete Dakin’ Harvey who finished with a reverse shot from a near-impossible angle high into the roof the EG net. As the clock ran down EG heads fell lower as the most one-sided of matches drew to a close.
Lewes 3s now hold a 6 point gap going into the next round of fixtures and must ensure that every game is approached in the manner of this one to extend this advantage.
MOM: Sam Webster.
