A wet, wild and grey Saturday afternoon set the scene for the 'El Classico' show down.
The men’s 3’s started with the ball and quickly realised the strong presence in the 4’s midfield meant this wasn’t going to be an easy game. Both teams had their share of possession, with the 3’s struggling to take their chances in the D.
Towards the end of the half a quick passage of play, using the channels and the rear pivot meant the 3’s found some momentum just before half time. Pulley found himself with the ball in the D and calmly found the back of the net. 1-0 at half time.
The second half proved to be a feisty affair. The older guard of the 4’s became increasingly frustrating with the elegance and simplicity of the 3’s ball moving ability. Tempers started to flair resulting in a yellow for Tom Harvey and a thoroughly appropriate yet ‘dick of the day worthy’ outburst at the opposition from Billy Smart. Keeper Stanley Hughes maintained his excellent run of form, a clean sheet and some key saves kept his team mates in front.
The direct and 'unlegendary' play from the physical opposition yielded no damage to the score line. Despite having the majority of the possession for the second half the 4’s defence stood strong. At long last a defenders foot was found allowing a perfectly executed short corner to extend the lead to 2-0.
The 3’s held their discipline, just, to see out the game and hold the result.
Next weekend the 3’s face Eastbourne 3’s away. Can we remain unbeaten going into the Christmas break?
