Unforeseen circumstances meant that Lewes started without a goalkeeper, fielding a kicking back. A close fought opening period saw a 10 man Mid Sussex team pushed hard to take advantage for which they were rewarded with a short corner. After successfully defending it, the Lewes goalkeeper joined the game and the tide began to turn. Focused pressure from the Lewes midfield and forwards created several chances and eventually, the goals began to come. Two in the first half from Harvey and Martin gave Lewes the lead at halftime.
An 11th man joined the Mid Sussex team at halftime but it was not enough to slow down a Lewes team with the taste of blood in their mouths. Wave after wave of green shirts attacked the wavering Mid Sussex defence and 3 more goals followed from Martin, Cooke C and Harvey The lack of training showed however when the hard working and solid Lewes defence was overrun and their clean sheet was left in tatters following a sloppy and unnecessary goal. Final score 5-1.
Proper preparation and training will be key if this unbeaten Lewes team is to continue their glorious start to the season when they face Worthing at home next.
Big mention to Jeremy Lancaster in his last game for Lewes. Another top performance!
