Lewes 3’s 5 v Eastbourne 3’s 3

Lewes entered the game looking for their first league win of the season against an Eastbourne team sitting above them in the table. Despite their pre-game team talk focusing on starting strong, Lewes soon found themselves 2-0 down.

Building on the resolve they had shown in previous weeks, Lewes kept their heads up and pressed hard searching for a break through, which duly came through a short corner where George Martin smash the ball low pass the keeper and stationary defenders.
Soon after, Lewes stole the ball back from Eastbourne deep inside the Lewes half and some great link up play between Tom Fewster, Sam Matthews and Charlie Coooke, left George Martin with only the keeper to beat. 2-2!

Lewes continued to press down either flank and soon George Martin had his 3rd and 4th goals of the afternoon. Eastbourne to their credit never gave up and capitalized on some sloppy passes by the Lewes team to make it 4-3. Lewes had their heats in their mouth towards the end, when Simon Bullmore took ‘watching the ball’ too literally as an innocuous loose pass was watched onto the post leaving Eastbourne scrambling to react first. Thankfully the ball remained out of the goal and everyone breathed out a sigh of relief.

In the closing minutes, Charlie Cooke sealed the win and the loudest cheer of the day with a fantastic solo effort down the left and great composure in front of goal. This sealed his nomination for man of the match, but special mentions must also go to Oli Loader, Archie Sherwood and George Martin.

Lewes are now up to 6th in the table and will look to maintain this momentum next week against bottom of the league Crawley.
