FIXTURE: Sussex Div 2
HOME TEAM: St. Francis Mens 1's 1
AWAY TEAM: Lewes Men's 3s 4 (Champness, Drake, Fewster 2)
Following the 3-1 loss on Saturday, Lewes travelled to a rescheduled match against mid-table St. Francis, hoping for a much better performance. Even before the start we lost Alan Forster for the first half of the game, since only one umpire turned up & Alan stepped up so the game could be played.
The first 20 minutes of the game was fairly even with chances coming for both teams; Sam Matthews painfully getting his knee in the way of a well struck Will Champness shot, and Stan Hughes making some excellent saves. Unfortunately Lewes conceded a goal and ended the half 1-0 down.
In the second half Lewes started to pass the ball around into space more. Getting the midfield of Tom Casselden, Billy Smart and Tom Harvey more involved, Lewes were progressively looking the stronger side.
Yet another Will Champness penalty corner levelled the score early on which gave Lewes more confidence. The second came from a great run along the base line from Chris Picken, who slipped the ball back for Tom Fewster just in front of goal to make it 2-1.
It wasn’t long before a further goal came: Billy Smart from a long corner passed the ball out wide to Tom Fewster, who showed some pretty basic 3D skills beating the St. Frances defence and then their keeper to make it 3-1.
Solid defending at the back from Hugo Youngman and Pete Dakin prevented any form of St. Francis come-back.
Richard Drake determined to score against his old club finally sealed the victory in the closing minutes of the game. Final score 4-1.
