FIXTURE: Sussex Div 2
HOME TEAM: Lewes Men's 3s 6 (Champness, Izzard, Pulley 4)
AWAY TEAM: Hailsham Mens 2's 0
After a weather enforced week's break, Lewes Men's 3s were itching to get back in action against Hailsham 2s.
Fielding a side with a distinctive veteran feel Lewes were under pressure from a strong and youthful Hailsham side in the early exchanges, however a somewhat fortuitous through ball from Richard Pulley eluded both the intended target but also the Hailsham keeper to give Lewes the lead.
A second swiftly followed from an excellent Will Champness strike following a penalty corner. Hailsham attempted to pull one back but the rear guard of Chris Picken, Tom Fewster, Hugo Youngman and Pete Dakin rebuffed many attacks. The few that got through were thwarted by John Cornish including a memorable one-on-one save at the end of the half which was critical.
The second half started with Lewes asserting utter domination over a wilting Hailsham. Pulley's second followed from another Champness assist and it was Champness who won the penalty stroke that Pulley converted for his hat-trick.
The Lewes midfield of the Casselden brothers and Tom Harvey surged forward again and again against the now broken Hailsham resistance and it was Billy Smart who found Pulley at the top of the area who beat the keeper for a fourth time with a crisp drive. A quick Tom Casselden delivery in the Lewes 25 found Champness surging forward in the midfield, a pin point accurate pass to Toby Izzard was clinically put into the back board to round off the scoring as Lewes romped home 6-0 winners.
A timely and devastating return to form as the season draws to a close.
