FIXTURE: Sussex Div 2
HOME TEAM: Horsham Men's 4 2
AWAY TEAM: Lewes Men's 3s 2 (Izzard, Kingsbury)
On a wet and generally miserable morning Lewes Men's 3s travelled to Horsham for a game played within the impressive backdrop of Christ’s Hospital School.
The excellent playing surface and determination of Lewes to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat ensured that Lewes started brightly. A penalty corner resulting in a cross-cum-shot from Jago Hussain that was superbly touched in at head height by Toby Izzard.
Horsham having reinforced their side from earlier games responded well and forced a scrappy equaliser against the run of play. Both sides battled to break the deadlock but the first half ended with no further scoring.
The second half again saw Lewes dominate the early exchanges and this culminated in an exceptional solo effort from Charlie Kingsbury.
Lewes scented victory but fate, in the guise of officialdom, intervened. A flurry of green cards disrupted Lewes play and structural integrity. Horsham took full advantage once again finding an equaliser.
Both sides had chances to win the match but the match petered out into a draw. Lewes arrested the run of defeats that had seen them slide down the table but bigger challenges in the shape of the inter-club game are on the horizon.
Next week Lewes must be more focussed and robust than they have been so far in 2018 if anything is to be taken.
MOM - Toby Izzard
