Lewes Men's 3s Win 7-2 against Brighton and Hove Men's 5s

After consecutive defeats and no goals registered in the 'for' column the home fixture against Brighton was a seminal moment for the 3s again without George Martin.

Fielding a robust side featuring veterans Picken and Champness ensured that Lewes would have an excellent defensive platform to launch their play. A distinctly positive attitude granted Lewes the outlook to play an expansive game.

As the game began it became clear that the Lewes forward line, led by Pulley, forced Brighton to drop deeper and deeper. This allowed the Lewes midfield of Hansford, Matthews and Casselden junior and Casselden senior to exploit their superior mobility over Brighton.

An excellent individual goal from J Hussain was followed by a second from Pulley. A crisp penalty corner routine resulted in a rifled finish from the evergreen Champness. Brighton arrested the slide by sneaking a penalty corner just before half time to keep the game competitive.

Brighton started strongly in in the second half but some excellent wing play from Kingsbury ended in a somewhat fortuitous but deserved goal.

Almost instantly Pulley added his second and Lewes’s fifth with a finish from the top of the D. Brighton again scored from a penalty corner but by now they were a beaten side.

A powerful cross from Hansford was deftly deflected in to complete a Pulley hat trick. Hansford adding a seventh after a goal mouth scramble. Final score 7-2. A vastly improved performance means Lewes can look forward to the visit of bottom side Southwick with some confidence next week.
