Cold and slippery pitch couldn’t dampen Lewes spirts

FIXTURE: Sussex Div 2
HOME TEAM: Worthing Men's 3s 2
AWAY TEAM: Lewes Men's 3s 3 (Harvey 1, Matthews 1, og)

An away game to Worthing is never an easy encounter but Lewes Men's 3s had confidence going into this game following their recent string of results.

Despite having the pushback to start the game, Lewes set themselves up defensively opting to play a half court press. Although they invited pressure, they never looked like conceding.

A number of quick counter attacks saw Lewes gain in confidence, stretching the legs of the older opposition. This eventually led to the first Lewes goal, with good link up play between the forward three of Jago Hussain, Fred Sanders and George Martin causing trouble in the Worthing D, and a shot deflected into the empty net by a Worthing defender.

With players from both sides slipping and sliding on the greasy pitch, sloppy play led to a Worthing equaliser but Lewes didn’t drop their heads and a skilful break from midfield by Drew Wain saw him crash the ball towards the goal keeper and was deftly deflected into the top corner by Sam Matthews. Half-time 2-1 Lewes.

The second half saw more of the same. Play became scrappy, with most players struggling to stay upright. Lewes won a number of penalty corners which saw Tom Harvey cream a beautiful shot from near the edge of D high into the net.

Lewes had more chances to stretch their lead, but a defensive mix up saw Worthing snatch one back. As the light faded and no signs of the floodlights, play didn’t get much better and the final whistle was welcomed by a victorious Lewes; 3-2

For the second game in a row it wasn’t pretty but a win is a win, and it shows how far this young team has come since forming at the start of last season.
