David beats Goliath with a little help from Billy and Ben

FIXTURE: Sussex Div 2
HOME TEAM: Lewes Men's 3s 3 (Martin 1, Wood 2)
HOME TEAM: Lewes Men's 2s 1 (Fuller)

This Saturday was as they say ‘it’, the most eagerly anticipated fixture since David met Goliath. The 2s v The 3s.

The scene was perfectly set: A lunchtime game, great weather and two teams coming into the match in a run of form.

The 2s in the home emerald green strip started brightly, their fluid passing and movement indicative of their table topping position. The 3s however played as befitting their strip, shadows in black tracking every 2s' move with an effective countermove.

The 2s dominated possession and applied significant pressure, however the defensive duo of Chris Picken and Tom Fewster epitomised the stoicism of the 3s' rearguard and what breached their defence was inevitably repelled by Man of The Match goalkeeper Billy Palmer.

Gradually the offensive springboards of Ali Hancorn and Tom Harvey launched the ball forward for striker Ben Wood to gallop away from the trailing 2s defence, and against expectations of the majority of the watching crowd, score the opening goal.

The crowd were further shocked when a second goal swiftly followed from a Tom Casselden, George Martin play - finished in the D with complete composure by Ben Wood.

The second half followed in similar vein: The 2s dominating territory and possession but failing to break down the 3s' resistance.

The 3s stuck to the tactically astute captain Tom Casselden master plan that bought further reward, a third goal on the breakaway from George Martin.

A late consolation from Pete Fuller could not detract from a famous victory.

Man Of The Match: Billy Palmer: Outstanding goalkeeping.
