Mens 2s Maul Horsham 2s

The Mens 2s produced a determined and disciplined display as they put 5 past Horsham in the Sussex 2nd XI Cup. Seb Daniels put Lewes ahead after a deft touch from Joe Rideout early on, before the marauding Sam Rea scored an early goal of the season contender, as he magnificently beat the whole of the Horsham defence from left back.

The visitors moved the ball well but the disciplined midfield of new boy Oliver Wilkinson, returning Tom Bentley and Oli Loader stopped any attacked developing. Nifty work from the midfield soon won Lewes a short corner and smart advantage play from the umpire allowed Oliver Amos to pounce for a tap in from a Tom Bentley strike.

Leading 3-0 at half time, Lewes subconsciously eased off in the second half but remained a strong unit, with the defence of Sam Anderson, Jamie Neill, Jamie Cooke and Theo Whiting breaking down any promising Horsham attacks. On the rare occasion Horsham did get a shot away in open play or from a penalty corner, keeper Billie Palmer stayed focused and was determined not to be beaten.

With Horsham’s resurgence spent, Lewes started to string some passes together and won a penalty corner. Chewy’s shot was blocked but Sam Rea pounced on the rebound and his strike found the net for his second of the game. With 5 minutes left, Lewes won another penalty corner which Chewy smashed into bottom corner, round off a well-deserved win.

Next week sees the Mens 2’s first league game, as travel to Worthing 2s looking for pay back being pipped to the league by them last season.
