Lewes Hockey Club are great at many things; match teas, snakebite and riding micro-scooters to name but a few.

However winning hockey matches is something that the men’s club have struggled with so far this season. This very reason is why the men’s 2’s found themselves at the foot of Kent/Sussex Div 2 without a win in 7 games. However, inspired by two draws on the bounce in recent weeks, they hosted a Canterbury side residing in mid-table.

It was Lewes though that started the brighter of the two sides, with a high press from forwards Cooke, Heinzl and Wood proving effective, however very rarely were goal-scoring chances created. Lewes showed their lack of confidence at times and individual mistakes almost let them down on three occasions, a combination of resolute defending and good goalkeeping keeping the Kent side at bay.

The first half ended goalless, but after the break Lewes started the 2nd with intensity, intelligence and vigor. They were rewarded with a penalty stroke after a sustained spell of pressure. Alex Warner duly converted high into the top corner. He then doubled this tally minutes later with a deflected drag flick off a penalty corner to make it 2-0

The two goal cushion added much needed confidence to the side and they then went on to put on their best spell of hockey all season. Will Wycherley picked the ball up, rounded the keeper, and squared it into Michael Wood, the forward slotting home his first goal of the season. 3-0.

Canterbury did pull one back against the run of play. An initial deflection was saved by Pewter onto the post, rebounding directly to a red shirt who slotted into an empty net. Lewes however did not panic and composure was key in the closing stages of the game.

Will Wycherley sealed the match with minutes to go with a fine goal which had many of the Lewes faithful choking on their Harvey’s. Picking the ball up on the by-line he danced past 4 players with 3D skills before slotting past the keeper from an acute angle. The win takes Lewes off the bottom, and a victory at Cliftonville next week will launch them up into mid-table.
