Goals from Wylie and Daniels see off stubborn Worthing side.

After a great victory in the Sussex Cup Semi-final, Lewes Men’s 2’s were raring to restart their league campaign with a victory against a team who were in the opposite half of the league in Worthing 2s.

From the off Lewes dominated possession with Worthing struggling to string many passes together. Lewes's formation was implemented perfectly allowing them to dominate the Worthing 442 with a special mention to the inside midfielders Danny Poulsen, Tom Bentley and Oli Loader forcing Worthing to have very little possession.

A minute into the game and central midfielder Tom Clinch took a ball to the knee which put him out of action for several minutes and forced Lewes to change personnel. With the depth in squad Lewes continued to dominate possession and created more chances up front.

The forward line of Seb Daniels, Sam Anderson, Oliver Amos and debutant Thomas Wylie caused Worthing all sorts of problems and with twelve minutes gone an rapid attack saw debutant Wylie deftly deflect the ball over the on-rushing Worthing keeper after some tidy play from Tom Bentley and Oli Amos. 1-0 Lewes.

The dominance continued by Lewes with the young goalkeeper, Billy Palmer, once again having a quiet day in the office. Lewes's quick attacks saw them win several corners in as many minutes and one of these was eventually converted; a neat deflection at the back post by Thomas Wylie again. 2-0 to the lads in green with 25 minutes played. The remainder of the half ended with Lewes on top but with a slight annoyance as many chances were created yet the score was only 2-0.

The second half started as the first ended and Lewes continued to dominate with Amos and Whiting having a field day down the right-hand side of the pitch and Anderson and Cooke on the left. From one of these attacks Sam Anderson got into the D rounded a player, slipped it to Seb Daniels, who rounded the keeper and calmly slotted home. 3-0 and Lewes cruising.

With 10 minutes to go Lewes suddenly stopped passing with the same accuracy and with a few sloppy passes lead to Worthing creating a few chances which they fortunately couldn’t convert. However, eventually they did with 5 minutes to play the ball ricocheted around the Lewes D and fell to the back post for an easy Worthing tap-in. The goal gave Worthing a bit of confidence and they pushed on, winning a short corner which was struck hard and wide but unfortunately took a horrid deflection off Jamie Neill’s stick and sent Palmer the wrong way. 3-2 with a minuet to play.

With Worthing pressing high Lewes simply needed to keep hold of the ball and they did as some calm and composed link up play down the right between Theo and Clinch got the ball into the corner as the umpire blow his whistle. Whilst on paper looking like a close game, another impressive performance from the Men's 2s see them make a strong start to the second half of the season and do the double over Worthing 2s. Next week sees the 2s travel to Brighton Mens 3s.
