Match report: Mark Best
The 1st started in dominant fashion going a goal up after Matt Hickman pilfered the ball from the opposition left back, immediately releasing Jon Petch, who coolly dispatched it, on the reverse. The boys in green then took their foot off the gas and became complacent, conceding a sloppy goal to the opposition. However, on the stroke of half time Hickman converted a Lewes penalty corner to recapture the lead.
A sluggish start to the second half saw Lewes concede two goals. But, the team weren’t daunted. Alex Lloyd started to find his range in a sequence of penalty corners, and scored the third Lewes goal. Having not learned their lesson from earlier in the game Lewes conceded a fourth goal, again through miscommunication in defence. This set up a tense final quarter for promotion hopefuls Lewes. The Sussex team kept their composure, blitzing the opposition in the last six minutes of the game to seal the win, with Hickman, Callaway and Spruce claiming a goal each.
Final score Lewes 6, Old Williamsonians 4.
