Lewes made a fast start, pressuring from the off and were rewarded in the opening 10 minutes with a tap-in goal after some slick passing. Jon Petch in for his third of the season.
The pressure continued and injections of pace from Chris Spruce and James Fuller were integral in setting up two quick-fire goals from Sam Murray and Matt Hickman giving Lewes a well-earned lead. Hickman was unlucky not to add more to his tally in the first half, but Lewes led 3-0 at halftime.
Lewes did not relent in the second half, again making a strong start and scoring within the first 5 minutes: Spruce and Petch combining again with precision for the fourth.
Holcombe tried to come back but were wasteful. Lewes ‘keeper, Andrew Isaacs, made some fine saves and saved a penalty stroke ensuring the clean sheet remained intact.
Spruce was the catalyst once again in the dying minutes, speeding round the defence, committing the keeper to the floor before slipping Hickman in for an easy fifth, and his second of the game.
Next Saturday Lewes play away at Sevenoaks. This should be an exciting fixture, with both teams starting the season with real intent.
