Worthing took the lead against the run of play after ten minutes from close range but Lewes equalised after twenty minutes when Paul Spruce converted a pass from skipper Rob Heinzl from the top of the circle. Just before half time Lewes took the lead when Chris Marchant unselfishly drew the goalkeeper and slipped the ball to Spruce to slot into an empty goal.
In the second half Lewes absorbed pressure but were quick to break and Marchant scored when he rounded the goalkeeper to make it 3-1. Worthing continued to press forward but solid defending from Ed Cade, Mark Tonkin and David Mansell supported by some good saves from keeper Chris Sharpe prevented goals and another quick break by Lewes resulted in a shot stopped on the line by a defender’s foot. The resultant penalty flick was calmly converted by Marchant. Worthing came back immediately as Lewes relaxed to make it 4-2 but Marchant skilfully dribbled through to notch his hat trick and Lewes’s fifth before Worthing made it 5-3 just before the final whistle.
