The score did not flatter Lewes who were strong in defence and clinical in front of goal.
The early exchanges saw Brighton dominate but with David Mansell, in his first game of the season, Stephen Fuller and Mark Tonkin outstanding in Lewes’s defence they dealt with every attack and slowly grew in confidence and put the hosts under pressure. With ten minutes to half time goal machine Robert Heinzl converted a penalty corner to give Lewes a narrow lead. In the second half the pattern of play was similar but Lewes broke quickly and missed chances to extend their lead. With twenty minutes to go the result was still in doubt with only a slender one goal advantage but then Heinzl thundered in another penalty corner and quickly followed up with a close range effort to complete his hat-trick. Brighton‘s heads dropped and with Billy Smart and Bill Short dominating midfield they added two more goals with Mike Fuller converting another penalty corner and then Heinzl scoring his fourth and Lewes’s fifth in the closing minutes.
