Priory had a young fast side but Lewes counteracted this with older, more experienced players and despite not enjoying long periods of possession they were more clinical with the opportunities they created. Lewes took the lead after twenty minutes when Rob ‘Goal machine’ Heinzl thundered home a penalty corner shot. Good defending by Mark Tonkin and Steve Fuller cleared any opportunities the hosts created and they held this lead at half time.
Priory threatened more in the second half and equalised when a deft deflection from a pass into the circle found its way into the corner of the goal. Lewes fought back and Mike Fuller was always threatening on the left wing helping to win a number of penalty corners which were well defended before finally Lewes converted one when Paul Spruce finished a well worked routine to take the lead again. Lewes came under pressure in the final ten minutes and Priory scored from close range to equalise with just over five minutes remaining. Then with the clock ticking down the hosts were awarded a disputed penalty corner in the final minute and despite blocking the first shot the second one was converted at the far post for the winner. Lewes did not have time for the push back before the final whistle sounded.
