Brighton boasted three ex first team players who dominated midfield surrounded by some skilful and quick youngsters and Lewes were rarely in this match. Lewes keeper Charlie Palmer and defenders Mark Tonkin, Ed Cade and Steve Fuller defended bravely against an onslaught from Brighton from the start. To their credit Lewes kept the score to 1-0 until with twenty minutes remaining in the second half the pressure finally told and the goals started flooding in. Lewes, in a rare attack, scored when Paul Spruce struck from a deflected penalty corner routine with five minutes remaining but it was scant consolation.
