They deserved to be level at half time with Paul Spruce opening the scoring deflecting Steve Fuller’s penalty corner shot into the goal. But two quick goals from the home side soon left them trailing 2-1. Just on half time Ed Thomas earned and converted a penalty stoke to leave it level at the break.
In the second half Lewes were barely able to get into Mid Sussex’s half as the home side dominated possession and created a hatful of chances. Brave saves by keeper Chris Sharpe and solid defending by Bill Short, Sam Matthews and Mark Tonkin kept the score level and with two minutes remaining Lewes were awarded a penalty stoke when, after virtually their only attack of the half, Fuller’s penalty corner shot had hit a foot on the line. Thomas coolly converted his second stroke of the match to give Lewes a somewhat undeserved victory.
