Mens 5s rescue point at the whistle

Having collected their first win in 10 games in their previous contest away to Crawley the Mens 5s headed home hoping to pick up more points as they try to stay above the relegation places, Mid-Sussex would be a tough challenge currently sat 5th in the league and having won the reverse fixture 5-1.

Great availability meant the 5s had a full squad of 16 Saturday morning but 3 late withdrawals for various reasons ( wishing Julien a speedy recovery! ) meant that Captain James's master plan had go thru several revisions before push back.

A tight first half saw goal chances at a premium, Lewes came closest to opening the score but at the break the game remained scoreless.

Again the second half was a tight affair both teams playing good hockey and the defences being hard to beat. A few feisty moments that lead to some handbags and a couple of cards were well controlled by umpires Max and Gubbs. A Mid-Sussex goal with just over 10 minutes to go seemed to have given the visitors the win but the 5s kept going and when a PC was awarded just before the whistle everyone bar keeper Paul moved to the edge of the D hoping to rescue a draw. David Churton, much missed during his injury layoff, was at the top of the D and his ball to the left post was swept in by injector Joe (who had not long returned to the pitch after a umpire enforced "rest") to earn a well earned draw, cue jubilant scenes in the Lewes ranks.

The 5s now have 3 games remaining and currently sit 4pts above the relegation places and hoping to finish the season strong.
