After 2 back to back below average performances which resulted in heavy defeats by Eastbourne and Worthing the Mens 5s knew they would need an improved display if they wanted to get anything against a strong Horsham team.
Early pressure from the visitors was rebuffed with Paul in goal making himself big to stop a couple of goal bound shots, the 5s started to play themselves into the game, both teams creating chances but the first half ended goalless but good hockey being played by both teams. The Lewes midfield of Tom E, JC, James W and impressive James T stepping up from the 6s were all non stop action in winning the ball back and building attacks.
The team talk at half time was focused on keeping up the work rate and being a bit more clinical with the passing.
The 5s came close when a goal bound shot hit a Horsham foot but unfortunately for the home team only a PC was given not a P flick. Both teams continued to press but when Lewes were reduced to 10 with a yellow card it looked like the advantage may move to the visitors but when James H found Joe on the base line a reverse pirouette shot resulted in a goal. Horsham did find an equaliser with a well worked goal from a powerful shot at the top of the D.
A 1-1 draw probably a fair result, a real team effort everyone giving their all for the cause, the 5s need to keep this type of performance going into the rest of the second half of the season.
Next week they will be the 'Away' team at the Southdown in the interclub derby against the 4s.
