Mid-Sussex 3s 5-1 Lewes Mens 5s

A challenging week for selection in the lower teams at the club meant the 5s were struggling to field their usual size squad in fact at one point on Friday they only had 7 confirmed players, as it was they headed to Ardingly college with a bare 11 with 2 of those arriving 10mins into the first half.

The 5s plan was be tight and compact while short handed then trying to be more adventurous when reinforcements arrived.
Unsurprisingly Mid-Sussex dominated the early play and when they took the lead after 4 mins it looked like it was going to be a long afternoon under the grey sussex sky. The 5s rallied when they were up to a full team with Inzi being a good outlet up front and the 3 young attacking midfielders of JC, Ashley and Callum doing a lot of running to support Inzi and being the first line of defence in the half pitch press.
The hosts made it 3-0 by 24 mins one of which was a P flick which Paul almost kept out. 5s got one back when Callum made a great banana run down the right and his ball from the touchline across the goal beat the keeper.

The 2nd half plan was much the same for the 5s, counter when they could and make life as hard as possible for Mid-Sussex. The first 20 mins was a stalemate Mid-Sussex being patient with their build up and the 5s denying space. Mid-Sussex added a 4th and had a chance for a 5th when they were awarded a 2nd P flick but this time Paul was able to deflect the high shot over the bar. The home team added another from open play on 63mins to run out 5-1 winners but the Lewes 11 could hold their heads high after giving their all. The defence of Simon, Peter, Nick and Julien did a great job of defending the D marshalled as always by Paul in goal and Tom as usual covering a lot of ground in midfield to break up numerous attacks.

Thanks to all those up made the effort to field a full team especially those who stepped up at last minute.

The 5s are at home at the Southdown next weekend v Worthing 5s hoping for a more straight forward week in terms of availability.
