They took until the second half to get into their stride in freezing conditions as Worthing more than matched them throughout. Worthing took the lead midway through the first half from close range and Lewes were grateful to goalkeeper Chris Sharpe for some timely saves as the hosts defence came under pressure. Lewes spurned chances and penalty corners of their own to go in 1-0 down at half time.
In the second half Lewes dominated possession and got their reward after 10 minutes when Mike Fuller's shot hit a defender's foot on the line and Chris Marchant coolly converted the penalty stroke. With Billy Smart and Sean Rowlands controlling midfield Lewes scored four times in 12 minutes as Marchant scored again with a hard shot from the top of the circle then got his hat trick with a powerful flick into the roof of the net. Worthing could not live with Lewes and Bill Short scored from close range just beating the goalkeeper to a cross and touching the ball home and finally Smart's run along the byline and cross was converted by Paul Spruce at the near post.
