Lewes lost their unbeaten record to a young, fast and skilful Chichester side.

Lewes were forced to defend for much of the match as Chichester dominated possession but Lewes still created chances that could have won them the match.

Lewes defender Bill Short cleared a goal bound shot over the bar and then Chichester hit the post before Lewes almost made the most of their limited possession when Sam Matthews also hit the post. Lewes’ first penalty corner unfortunately resulted in a goal at the wrong end of the pitch as the hosts quickly countered with a break away from their own circle and with few Lewes defenders back scored from close range.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Chichester dominating hitting the post and missing chances before Lewes, led by Billy Smart in midfield created chances of their own. They hit the post from a penalty corner shot and then, with five minutes left, Chichester scored their second after the best move of the game with a finish to match a quick passing move from midfield. Lewes did score with two minutes left when Smart smashed the ball into the bottom of the goal from the top of the circle with a reverse stick strike but it was too little too late.
