Experience won over youth in a match that had everything. Lewes opened the scoring when Paul Spruce deflected in Billy Smart’s short corner strike but Horsham equalised in bizarre circumstances when a pass was defected off a defender’s stick onto a Horsham stick in the circle wrong footing Lewes goalkeeper Chris Sharpe who pulled a leg muscle as the ball rolled slowly into the goal. Sharpe had to go off leaving Lewes to play for the rest of the half with a kicking back. Skipper Rob Heinzl then put Lewes ahead after rounding the goalkeeper to make it 2-1 at half time.
Former GB goalkeeper Sean Rowlands took over in goal at half time and Lewes stretched their lead when Sam Matthews’ pass was volleyed into goal by Spruce. Despite pressure from the Horsham youngsters the Lewes defence held firm with Ed Cade and David Mansell breaking up their attacks and with minutes left Josh Pewter scored from close range to make it 4-1. Just on the final whistle Bill Short got a ball in the face from close range luckily not causing serious injury.
