Lewes started the half strongly with early Southwick drives into the D thwarted by a Lewes' trusty defensive unit. Lewes had their moments too, a good drive into the D by Ben Woods was only denied by a good last ditch tackle by Southwick. A series of long corners for Lewes lead to a great run by Woods which resulted in a first Lewes short corner and a rebound goal for Dax Debiche.
Lewes were now creating numerous chances, but just failing with the final pass. Thanks to their players from higher sides, Southwick started marshalling the middle of the pitch and consolidated their shape with some great central defensive cover. Only an excellent saving tackle by Jamie prevented a great chance at goal for the home team.
Lewes then capitalised on a penalty corner opportunity. Perfect injection by Debiche and a perfect shot by Rolph. 0-2 Lewes. Lewes then had to withstand a series of Southwick penalty corners, with C. Palmer in goal, with support from defender O. Pendered, a series of key saves to maintain the 2 goal lead at halftime.
Southwick started the first half on front foot. But Lewes forwards still managed some decent attacking play and created chances. However after a series of Southwick corners Lewes conceded a soft, but hotly disputed goal. This was followed by a good run into the D resulting in Southwick's equaliser
Lewes needed to resettle. And settle they did, against an increasingly physical Southwick side. They defended a series of long and short corners brilliantly. Unfortunately, and against the run of play, Southwick got the ball into the net using the unconventional approach of using a players body, not a stick. The goal did however stick. Sending Lewes home with an undeserved loss.
However, the team should take heart from improving performances. And a reminder that the home fixture is unlikely to offer Southwick such amenable conditions.
Very unlucky 3-2 loss.
