FIXTURE: Sussex Div 4
HOME TEAM: Lewes Men's 5s 5 (Colebourn, Wain, Cornish, Fuller, Debice)
AWAY TEAM: Brighton & Hove Men's 8s 0 - Clean sheet for Stan Hughes.
On Saturday Lewes Men's 5s maintained their chase for promotion with a dominant 5-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Men's 8s.
From the whistle Brighton were on the attack looking dangerous. Jon Cornish was psyched though, playing his debut outfield game for Lewes and following a midfield turnover he dribbled the ball from the halfway line into the visitors D where his final slip pass found Peter Colebourn to put away his first goal of the season (as he had promised before the game).
The Lewes skipper Malcolm Wain, doubled the host's lead after 20 minutes, sweeping in another cross from Cornish who then bundled home a third goal of his own after the break, moments after a goal had been disallowed at the other end.
At 3-0 victory was looking comfortable with chances few and far between for Brighton. The Lewes defence of Mansell, Bullen, Forster and Murray had stood strong leaving little for Stan Hughes to do in goal and Simon Popple, Dax Debice and Ollie Pendered chased, blocked and stole the ball consistently from the visitor's midfielders.
With 10 minutes to play, a now trademark Lewes 5s move provided the fourth goal when Phil Brown hammered a ball into the skipper to 'wall pass' on to centre forward Steve Fuller who struck the ball confidently on the turn past the Brighton keeper.
The Lewes skipper thought he had another in the final minute as he swept the ball under the keeper but, as the man in the pads rolled backwards the ball appeared to be saved, only for Dax Debice to drag it out and tap it in as just rewards for his tireless efforts all game.
