We were lucky enough to send two Under 10 Girls teams to Eastbourne Hockey Club for the first league matches of the new season.
Lewes Lynxes were up first with Ava, Ruby, Sophie, Elena, Matilda, Sylvia, Erin, Emilia, Evelyn and Phoebe in the team. The Lynxes demonstrated some good skills, remembering to pass wide and running in to space, allowing the girls to maintain possession of the ball almost throughout. Three goals from Erin and three from Ruby saw the girls win with 6 goals.
End score: Eastbourne 3 – 6 Lewes Lynxes
Lewes Leopards were up next – with Miri, Hannah, Isabel, Isla, Laura, Juliet, Inca, Martha, Tess and Merle. The girls worked very well together despite many of the younger players not being in a league match before. Subbing on and off allowed the players to learn from each other as well as rotating positions. Good team work saw the Leopards score 7 goals – 3 from Laura, 1 from Hannah and two from Isabel.
End score: Eastbourne 0 – 7 Lewes Leopards
Next up Lynxes vs Leopards for another exciting game. First time Leopard’s goalie Merle got hammered by the Lynxes, but the Leopards soon found their rhythm and with good defense tactics managed to keep some possession. The Lynxes demonstrated some excellent dribbling and passing skills, and scored 10 goals. The Leopards weren’t ready to lie down quite yet and kept chipping away at the score managing to win the ball on a number of occasions and ultimately score.
End score: Lewes Lynxes 10 – 4 Lewes Leopards.
Well played, all the girls, especially those new to the U10 side, some great talent coming up and it’s good to see all the girls working together to create those goals. Although we don’t like singling players out, most improved player has to go to Isabel Day on this occasion, playing in a new position, and also to Laura Hutchinson who really demonstrated some class playing. On the Lynxes side – Erin Murphy was on fire but of course can’t do it without her team mates, so well done all.
Areas for improvement:
• Short corners – this was our first time doing ‘proper’ mask corners and there’s much to learn, including goalie skills for new goalie.
• Stopping and passing the ball far, hard and wide.
• Feet, let’s keep the ball off our feet and on our sticks.
Thank you to the players for their bucket loads of enthusiasm and positive attitudes, parents, supporters, coaches and managers.
