Lewes U21 3 Eastbourne U21 3 [Lewes Win 5-4 On Penalty Strokes] [Lloyd, Zimmerman, Griggs]

Lewes won the U21 Cup in dramatic style when they won a penalty shoot out after the two sides were locked at 3-3 at fulltime.

Lewes started slowly and conceded from a penalty corner when a shot was deflected in off a Lewes defender’s stick. For periods Eastbourne dominated but could not get a second goal and, on the stroke of full time, Alex Lloyd converted a penalty corner for Lewes to level the scores. In the second half Lewes started playing their best hockey - moving the ball around and stretching the Eastbourne defence. They took the lead when skipper Connor Zimmerman converted another penalty corner with a powerful flick into the bottom of the goal and further Lewes pressure paid off when Ben Griggs followed up a shot to score to make it 3-1 with under 20 minutes remaining. Eastbourne fought back and made it 3-2 following an error in the home defence and then were awarded a penalty stroke after a Lewes defender was harshly judged to have pushed in the circle. The stroke was calmly converted to make it 3-3. Lewes had to soak up more pressure in the closing minutes with Max Rhodes and James Heaton making some critical covering tackles.

Lewes converted all their strokes through James Fuller, Lloyd, Zimmerman, Patrick Alvgren and Griggs. Eastbourne scored from their four strokes but on the fifth Lewes goalkeeper Ollie Mackenzie made a great save to win the cup for Lewes.
