Helen Fuller aka Gubbs (our fantastic Umpire Coordinator) recounts her interview with Max Coles earlier in the season.

Really, young Max is a proper pucker star for Lewes - county appointed ump, Lewes superpeeper, and willing coach to aspiring young umpires. Superstar Extraordinaire!

I asked Max what first attracted him to umpiring?
Max told me it was to give a little bit back. Nice!

‘And who’s your umpiring idol?’
It didn’t take long for Max to gather his thoughts. ‘Will Champness is an inspiration to me with his wonderful strut, and Big Malc brings a tear to my eye.
I have pictures of them both in my breast pocket whenever I peep’. He sighs and looks glassy eyed.

‘Max, if you were an umpire animal, which animal would it be?’
‘I’d be a fluffy bunny’ Max tells me ‘I don’t take the games too seriously, and I’d rather talk to players than flash cards. If I call a player over, a twitch of my nose is normally enough’
Now that explains Max’s penchant for a cheeky salad garnish.
