All level at the Triangle on our opening game

Kate Lambourne23 Sep 2024 - 13:22

The league begins for the 3s!

Felt good to back playing with the lovely 3s this week for our first league game of the season! Energy was high (even with a lack of balls and masks to our name) and we were ready to face Mid Sussex once again!

The greens started off strong with lots of quality possession of the ball, pushing up the pitch with silky skills from Goldie, Gabi and Naomi in the midfield. Unfortunately, after a dominant first 15 minutes, a mistake at the back led to an overload for Mid Sussex and eventually a goal. But the 3s were not deterred! We regrouped and continued as we started, rebuilding the attack. Some delightful passing get us up to the D and then a precise pass across by Goldie landed perfectly for Rhi to slot in the back of the goal! Congratulations to Rhi for scoring on her debut! We kept fighting to find another goal before the break, with our subs Tilly and Charlotte coming on to cause some trouble for MS, but still no luck.

After a half time break and some sweets, we were ready to get cracking on the second half - which turned out to be a bit scrappy! The team went out hard and we were very unlucky not to score again. With the wise guidance of Lizzie, our attacking shorts were looking fiery - Gubs standing command at the top of the D, feeding balls wide to our slips Gabi and Rhi who both hit the post!! Still our attack remained strong, with Jess and Tilly forcing the ball back from the opposition again and again. Eventually the fatigue and heat seemed to catch up with us and MS managed to become more dominant in the last 15 minutes, but Lewes still managed to keep them at bay. Our back line of Isla, Lou, Lizzie and Kate continuously defended the goal even with the onslaught of short corners and 1 mask! And of course the wonderful Freya was consistently making breathtaking saves to keep us in the game across the whole 70 minutes. There was an unfortunate mis communication and error on timings with our substitutions during a short corner that meant a green card was issued to captain Kate - getting our first card out of the way early!

The match was rounded off with a slice of lemon drizzle cake baked by the wonderful Gabi, and we crowned our Player of the Match, Lizzie! Very well deserved today, showing some exquisite defending as well as attacking, never turning down the heat, even without being subbed!

Well played everyone, all eyes on Saturday vs the 4s!
