Lewes started well, despite a confident and well drilled Brighton team. They broke through down the right on a number of occasions with both Emily Chevassut and Harriet Wheatley causing the home team problems. Despite four short corners in the first half, Lewes failed to convert any of them and Brighton looked strong on the break. Midway through the 1st period, Brighton capitalised on one of these breaks, catching the defence off guard and taking the lead.
At the break, manager, Andy Green and Captain, Fi Tubb restored confidence, rallying the team, who were still very much in the game with both sides very evenly matched. However, the home side came out much stronger in the second half and marked well to keep some of Lewes’ key players out the game. Frustratingly, their second goal came about ten minutes in from a fairly weak short corner.
In spite of this, Lewes showed grit and determination with some great skills and forging runs from Rosie Youngman and Fi Tubb who created some decent opportunities for the forwards. But it wasn’t to be - they just couldn’t find the back of the goal.
As the clock was ticking, Lewes’ hopes of securing any points were also fading and Brighton well and truly secured their fate with a 3rd goal towards the end of the second half.
Despite a 3-0 defeat, this did not reflect the game fairly. The only difference between the two sides was that Brighton took their chances. On another day, it could have been a very different story and Lewes look forward to playing them again, at home, in the second half of the season.
