Lewes secure the draw in final short corner of the match

FIXTURE: SLL Prem Div
HOME TEAM: South Saxons Ladies 1's 2
AWAY TEAM: Lewes Ladies 2s 2 (Goldsmith, Tubb)

A second game in one weekend for the Lewes Ladies 2s, who had to rely on some of their 3rd eleven to make sure that there was a team of 11 fielded against South Saxons, for this potential relegation game.

Lewes dominated much of the first half and had several chances thwarted by some strong defending and goalkeeping. Frustratingly for Lewes - and a reflection of much of the second half of the season - despite this dominance, South Saxons scored from a well worked penalty corner to put them 1-0 up at half time.

Undeterred, Lewes continued to press throughout the opening part of the second half and were rewarded with a goal, which seemed to lift the team. However, this was fairly short lived, as South Saxons again worked a penalty corner around the top of the D, moving the Lewes defence out of position and allowing them to score.

Lewes showed great character and determination and continued to pressure the South Saxons defence. Several penalty corners were won by the Lewes forward line and midfield, without product, until the ball was put in the back of the net by Kerry Fitzpatrick. Unfortunately this was disallowed by the umpires.

Lewes could have given in and accepted that it wasn’t their day, but showed superb guts and determination and continued to batter the Saxons defence. A penalty corner in the dying minutes of the game, led to a penalty corner being given just as the final whistle blew.

Taking note of the space that had been left in previous penalty corners, the ball was slipped right to Sara Riley, who deftly tapped it back in for man of the match, Fi Tubb to slot into the net.

A great result, especially as the bottom two in the premier league could, depending on results in the South league, find themselves relegated. This draw lifted the 2s out of the bottom two into the safety zone.
